Google announces new Gesture Search

Google Search Gesture

Does it take too long to get to the right search suggestions? Or find it hard to speak a query in a quiet environment? To make a lot of things easier, Google has recently introduced Gesture Search, a new Google Labs application for Android-powered devices running Android 2.0 or above in the US.

With the new feature, users can quickly find a contact, an installed application, a bookmark or a music track from hundreds or thousands of items, by simply drawing alphabet gestures on the touchscreen.

Just open Gesture Search and draw a letter and the feature returns a list of items that have words starting with that letter. If the handwriting of a searcher isn’t all that neat, that’s okay. If the letter ‘A’ looks a bit like an ‘H’, ‘H’ results will be brought up as well.

Further, if needed, users can erase a query by crossing it horizontally: left to right erases the entire query, and right to left removes the last letter or space in the query. Users can either scroll down the list to find that friend or write more letters to refine the search. In addition, the new Gesture Search enhances search quality by learning from users’ search history.

The Gesture Search app can now be downloaded from the Android Market.
