Gmail app for BlackBerry being abandoned by Google

Gmail app for Blackberry

The Gmail app for BlackBerry will officially stop receiving support from Google starting November 22. Announced in a recent blog post, Google said that this would also mean the end of Google Apps, Google Apps for Business, Government and Education on BlackBerry.

This Gmail application designed for RIM smartphones is aimed at rendering easy and quicker access to emails and documents on the mail service by Google. It is currently available on several mobile platforms like Android, Symbian Series 60 for Nokia, and more. Also, for the Android OS by Google, the native app comes pre-installed.

The denunciation of this app by Google in the coming few days does not necessarily mean that existing users of this app will have to get rid of it. However, they will have to continue using it without the application being officially supported by the makers, which may or may not offer certain issues at some point of time. But the app certainly won’t invite more users on BlackBerry since the download facility for the same will be pulled down too.

But BlackBerry owners who access their Gmail accounts from the handsets have an option of using the web browser to do so. Google conveyed in the blog that it has taken efforts in the past year to enhance the Gmail experience on the mobile web and will continue to focus in this area. The iOS as well as Windows Phone platform also do not have a native app for Gmail and utilize the mobile web version of the same.

Even though the Gmail app for BlackBerry will cease to receive official assistance starting November 22, Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server will continue to be supported.
