Forget Facebook, YouTube is the place to be for teenagers

Facebook is apparently losing out to YouTube as the website most preferred by teenagers. So if you need any more proof that videos can be more engaging than photos, this is it. But Facebook already knows this of course. Why else would it relax some of its privacy rules for teens in the face of backlash from security watchdogs everywhere?

The company itself admitted to having a falling number of daily users where those in their early teens are concerned, says Mashable. It’s no wonder that The Futures Company has some troubling data to offer the social network. At the same, it’s not all bad news for Facebook even if it’s supposed to be the favorite site of 45.2% of participating teenagers as pitted against YouTube’s 50% claim.

YouTube

The Zuckerberg-headed company is the number one website for 55% of those in their twenties. In other words, it’s this group of internet users which saves the social network from losing its top dog spot to YouTube when the 12- to 29-year age bracket is considered. Get this; 18.3% of 12- to 15-year olds could agree with the words ‘I’m addicted to Facebook’ as opposed to 30.5% of participants in their twenties.

The other big names in the list of favorites include Amazon, Google, Twitter and Yahoo with 27.8%, 25%, 19.5% and 12.1%, respectively. Tumblr and eBay get 12.3% and 10.7% in this popularity poll. Google-owned YouTube has been seen upping its game over the past few weeks. It has unveiled offline video viewing and revamped comments twice within a short span of time.

The survey figures by The Futures Company takes into account the responses of 4000 participants. The report will be finding its way into the 2013 TRU Youth Monitor.
