Ford Fiesta gets SYNC AppLink

SYNC AppLink Ford is taking heed of consumer requests and introduces the new SYNC AppLink software that permits hands-free voice control of varied smartphone applications.

SYNC AppLink which is a downloadable software upgrade, will be made available in 2011 for Fiesta. Along with this software, SYNC communications and infotainment system will also be released sometime later this year. This software allows users hands-free control of their applications on their Android or BlackBerry smartphones, via voice commands and vehicle controls.

Doug VanDagens, director of Ford’s Connected Services Organization comments that, “The growth in smartphone mobile apps has been explosive, and Ford has worked hard to respond at the speed of the consumer electronics market. SYNC is the only connectivity system available that can extend that functionality into the car. AppLink will allow drivers to control some of the most popular apps through SYNC’s voice commands and steering wheel buttons, helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”

Apparently, the Android Market and BlackBerry App World are one of the leading growth markets for mobile applications. The new SYNC AppLink aims at integrating the applications by using the vehicle’s voice, user interface controls and buttons on the steering wheel. This will increase the eyes-on-the-road and hands-on-the-wheel time. The first SYNC-enabled apps come inclusive of the Pandora internet radio, Stitcher ‘smart radio’ and Orangatame’s OpenBeak app for Twitter, and other apps to be introduced as well.

Ford has taken special care of integrating SYNC apps for enhanced consumer experience. The built-in apps include Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist, which can be downloaded and installed directly on the in-car SYNC operating system. Other SYNC apps like Traffic, Directions & Information rely on beamed-in or ‘cloud-based’ information. Drivers can access the Ford Service Delivery Network, a network of data centers providing turn-by-turn directions, business searches, and on-demand news, sports and weather information, through a simple voice-connection using their cell phone.

For developers, Ford has started a new developer network on its SYNCmyride Web Site. Developers can look up the website and send in their ideas and innovations. They can also avail latest information and news about the SYNC application programming interface (API) and software development kit (SDK).

Users can download SYNC-enabled mobile apps from the same app store that they currently visit. Users will be prompted as and when new applications are released in the app store.
