First 3G femtocell to be launched by Sprint

Sprint 3G Femtocell System Earlier, it was reported that AT&T is going to launch the 3G Microcell femtocell system by the year end. Now Slashgear reports that Sprint is going to launch a 3G femtocell before AT&T.

Sprint’s VP of device and technology development Matthew Oommen has said that Sprint’s 3G femtocell will enhance voice-call reception as well EVDO Rev.A coverage for Sprint handsets.

“Just like Sprint was the first with 2G, we’ll definitely be the first in the 3G space as well. We’re not talking about trials; we’re talking about full commercial service,” commented Mathew Oommen, Sprint.

Oommen did not reveal the specific date when Sprint’s 3G femtocell would arrive or details about the service plan, hardware providers or price. He did disclose that there would be multiple 3G femtocells launched. One of the femtocells would be more suitable for enterprises and the devices would be part of Sprint’s open device initiative.
