The Mobile World Congress held at Barcelona earlier this year saw the company sharing its Communication Entertainment strategy with everyone. The recent announcement of the launch of PlayNow arena with movies delivers upon this strategy.
Consumers can enjoy viewing around 60 movies a year on their mobile phones with PlayNow arena with movies, a bundled movie service from Sony Ericsson which is included out-of-the-box for certain handsets. Viewers have the opportunity to enjoy the best possible viewing experience by having to select from an array of around 15 movies at any one time. Every month new titles are added to the catalogue. Once feature length films are ‘side loaded’ onto users’ phones, they can view them as many times as possible for up to 90 days.
Taking into account the performance of users’ phones, the downloaded movies are automatically formatted. The picture quality, sound quality and images are crisp and clear.

The working of PlayNow arena with movies is as follows. First users should download movies to their computer from www.playnow-arena.com/movies. Then they should transfer these movies to their Sony Ericsson phone by ‘side loading’ them from their computer to their phone via a USB device. Users can enjoy these movies as many times as they wish to for up to 90 days. It is not possible to play these specially formatted movies on any other device. There is a choice of around 15 movies at any given time. Every month approximately four additional titles are added to the catalogue to replace outgoing content. Over the period of a year, a total of up to 60 movies can be downloaded. The available movie catalogue will depend on the country and will be a mix of classics and newer titles.
PlayNow arena with movies will emerge first with the W995 Walkman and will be launched in Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the U.K. from June 2009. Recently publicized phones such as Satio and Aino will also have this service made available.
