Consumers who are of the view that rugged smartphones ought to be bulky, big and unportable may have to alter their notions. Casio recently teamed up with Verizon Wireless to announce the availability of their new sleek Android-powered handset called G’zOne Commando.

Touted to be the first rugged Android smartphone on Verizon’s network, the sturdy Casio G’zOne Commando is crafted to endure the toughest conditions. It features the advanced G’zGear software, which employs the Triple Sensor technology using direction, acceleration and temperature for delivering better all-round performance.

The device runs on Android 2.2 and integrates a 5 megapixel auto-focus LED camera. It effectively meets 810G military standards for rain, dust, shock, vibration, salt fog, altitude, temperature extremes and solar radiation. The various connectivity attributes proffered by this handset include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, stereo Bluetooth and VZ Navigator for GPS with audible turn-by-turn directions.

This handset also incorporates a mobile hotspot feature that enables users to share its 3G connection with up to five other devices. The G’zGear software operates in eight varied modes such as Earth Compass, Walking Counter, Star Gazer, Thermometer and more, optimized especially for outdoor activities.

Beginning tomorrow, Casio G’zOne Commando will be made available via Verizon’s website for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement. Consumers will have to subscribe to a new data plan starting at $29.99 with monthly access.
