Android 1.5 upgrade for the T-Mobile G1 postponed?

Android and T-Mobile logos Calendar T-Mobile G1 owners have to wait another week to get their Android 1.5 upgrade as the release date has been pushed back from May to June.

A statement was released through T-Mobile Forums regarding the delay:

“We’d like to provide an update on the rollout of Android 1.5 for T-Mobile G1 customers. We are working diligently to get Android 1.5 out as soon as possible, while aiming to ensure a consistent, positive experience for our customers. We’re finalizing the build this week to ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery. Therefore, the rollout schedule has been reset by approximately a week, and we expect all G1 customers will have the update by early June. Your device will notify you when the update is available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The Android 1.5 has a noticeable new feature, namely, the on-screen keyboard. Even when the phone is in portrait mode, users can enter text using this feature. Presently, T-Mobile G1 users have to rotate their phones to landscape mode and open the keyboard to enter text.

There are additional Homescreen widgets in the Android 1.5 such as calendar, music player and a picture frame to the already existing analog clock and the search widget.

Greater support for video is provided by the most recent version of Google’s OS, including video recording with the built-in camera and playing video in the MPEG-4 and 3GP formats. Videos can be uploaded to Youtube and still images can be uploaded to Picasa; both services are owned by Google.

Further improvements have been made such as updates and enhancements to the standard web browser, and the addition of Stereo Bluetooth.
