ABI Research: Apple, RIM, HTC Ignited Mobile Phone Segment in 2010

ABI Research Logo Mobile phones are no more basic communication instruments as they fulfill distinct needs with leading technologies and interesting applications are now being included to improve the overall performance. ABI Research elucidates that 390 million mobile phones and smartphones were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 which touts to be up 15.6 percent year-on-year.

Nokia has been striving hard to carve out innovative phones and managed to acquire 31.7 percent market share. On the other hand, Samsung grabbed a major chunk with 20.7 percent market share. Apple iPhone 4 has revived the segment ever since its evolution and captured 4.2 percent while RIM made appearances with keyboard and touchscreen smartphones which earned them 3.6 percent market share.

“Huawei, ZTE and TCL/Alcatel Mobile are being joined by Indian vendors Micromax and Spice Mobile as regional and global handset movers and shakers,” remarked mobile devices VP and practice director Kevin Burden.

HTC, Huawei, ZTE and TCL also graced the market. In addition, other companies made news like LG with 7.8 percent, Sony-Ericsson with 2.9 percent and Motorola with 2.9 percent market share. Besides, chipset companies like ARM and Qualcomm have benefited with the overall smartphone demand. MediaTek is all set to enhance the low-end smartphone segment. Manufacturers across Indian and China have been coming up with competitively priced handsets and smartphones that suit various consumer requirements.

Well, 1.36 billion handsets totally were shipped in 2010 which is remarkable as in 2009 shipments had reached 4.4 percent year-on-year.
