Amazon smartphone fail will be caused by 3D interface and gesture control

Imagine the Amazon smartphone as we know it, with a 3D interface and gesture controls enabled by various sensors as well as the mind-boggling number of cameras on the device. Let’s get the reports so far straight before venturing any further – retail giant Amazon is rumored to be working on a secret Project Smith handset which has 6 cameras and image recognition for shopping.

The codename for the Amazon phone and the detail about image recognition for shopping came from TechCrunch in October 2013. The second feature we’ve mentioned will apparently let you click a photo of any object you see in the real-world and check if the retailer has it up for sale. The post also talked about 4 lenses onboard for tracking the user’s eye and head motions. Fast-forward to the present and we know what the device may actually look and have a bit more information.

This is the second time BGR has brought us pictures of the Amazon handset, though the new one (post above) looks more like a render than a proper product shot. The smartphone might be sold with Prime Data where the company itself will foot the data bill for specific services that its customers access on it. A forked version of Android, a 4.7-inch display, 2GB of RAM and a quad core Snapdragon processor are expected too.

There will be 4 cameras onboard just for gesture control that the gadget is supposed to deliver and 2 for clicking photos. If the screen will depend heavily on gestures made in order to respond to users, then this might be its undoing. BGR reported about traditional menu buttons being unavailable and people having to tilt the phone to the left, right, up, down and what not in order to access various things, and it sounds a whole lot confusing as well as frustrating to us.

At one point of time, there was a rumor about the Amazon smartphone costing $0 with ads. But the company dashed all hopes of such a freebie when telling AllThingsD that it was definitely not going to offer hardware at no cost to the end user.
