Competition Commission states TRAI should take a stand on net neutrality

The chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Ashok Chawla has said that the issue of net neutrality being a policy matter, TRAI must take a stand on it. The fair trade watchdog organization has also conveyed that it will look into the matter when it comes to the CCI.

While reiterating that the subject hasn’t reached the government body as yet, Chawla said that they are ready for any interaction with TRAI regarding net neutrality. However, it’s the regulatory body that has to decide first.

The Competition Commission of India will then look into the matter based on whatever happens in terms of behavior, as in conformity and not in conformity of policy. The CCI chairman mentioned this while he was speaking on the sidelines of CCI’s annual day function in New Delhi, according to a PTI report cited by Hindustan Times.

The Competition Commission of India actually happens to be a body that can only order a probe if there is prima-facie evidence of any violation of competition norms by companies in the nation. The fair trade body has in the past seven years managed to deal with 600 anti-trust cases.

The issue of net neutrality has been gaining a lot of attention recently, with telecom operators entering into tie-ups for offering free access to particular content, thus violating the unwritten rules of the internet. TRAI had released a consultation paper on the matter recently, about which a parliamentary committee is holding a meeting today with the country’s top telecom operators.

While the Competition Commission of India has now made its stand clear, the focus has again shifted towards TRAI, which will be taking its decision regarding net neutrality soon.
