MediaTek comes up with MT6595 4G LTE octa core chipset to India

MediaTek has announced the unveiling of a new chipset for the Indian market with 4G LTE connectivity integrated. The new MediaTek MT6595 SOC will go up against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 which currently dominates the high-end segment.

The Economics Times is reporting citing PTI as its source that the new MediaTek chipset will be the MT6595 which features an octa core configuration. Unlike the currently available 8 core processors from the company, the new MediaTek MT6595 is based on the latest architecture from ARM, the Cortex A17, which is the successor to the once popular A9.

MediaTek Processor

The latest MediaTek MT6595 processor will be as beastly as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800/801 as it supports WQXGA 2560 x 1600 resolutions, up to 20MP cameras and Ultra HD (4K) video playback amongst others. The chip is made up of quad Cortex A17 cores clocked as high as 2.2GHz and quad power-efficient Cortex A7 cores at 1.7GHz max.

Graphics are in the hands of PowerVR Series6 chips which are used in the iPhone 5S and the latest series. For connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS and 4G LTE Cat.4 (FDD and TDD). The SOC has been so far seen only in a handful of smartphones including the Alcatel Onetouch D820, the Meizu MX4 and the Lenovo Vibe X2-CU. The last device could be the first to offer the new processor in India as it has already been listed on the company’s country-specific website.

The MediaTek MT6595 processor is without a doubt a very powerful SOC, but you won’t find it in high-end phones. We expect to see it dominate the mid-range segment offering high performance devices at affordable prices.
