Facebook Messenger now supports voice calls in India

In January last year, Facebook Messenger was infused with its new voice calling attribute, but it was only limited to the app’s US and Canada versions. It later made its way into other territories, and has finally managed to set foot in India. An update released over the weekend allows users of the instant messaging service to place voice calls to their Facebook contacts for free.

All they need is a strong data connection or the availability of Wi-Fi. This update has been beamed out to both the Android as well as iOS versions of the Facebook Messenger app, but the recently released Windows Phone edition still remains without the voice calling feature.

In order to place a voice call, both parties concerned should have the app installed on their mobile devices. It cannot work on the desktop version in any way. Also, calls can only be placed to Facebook contacts, as there’s no dialer in the app.

Through the Android app, a voice call can be placed by tapping the menu option within a chat and hitting the ‘Free Call’ tab. On the other hand, in the iOS app a call can be placed by selecting a friend and tapping the ‘i’ icon in the upper right hand corner to get the ‘Call options’ choice.

The Facebook Messenger updates allowing voice calling in India are now rolling out through the Google Play store and the Apple App Store.
