Motorola’s Moto E smartphone launch in India gives Samsung the jitters

With its budget Moto E smartphone launch in India, Motorola has chosen to go where Samsung hasn’t dared to tread in quite some time. The Moto maker has given its ridiculously low priced handset a well publicized release, one which ensures that it has a foot in every rung of the low- to mid-range ladder.

There’s the Motorola Moto E which costs Rs 6999 for those migrating from feature phones to smartphones, the Rs 12499 Moto G for folks aiming for a more advanced device which doesn’t burn a huge hole in the wallet and then the Moto X for people who question the need to spend an excessive amount of cash on high-end handset like the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the Apple 5S.

The newest of Samsung’s offerings in India which dip below the Rs 10000 mark are the Galaxy Star Pro and Galaxy Trend, both with single core processors and some very forgettable features. The Moto E arrives with Android KitKat out of the box and a dual core chipset. Motorola’s strategy of going at it one phone at a time means it appears to aggressively back each and every device it launches.

Moto E specs list at a glance:

– Android KitKat 4.4 OS
– Dual core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 chip
– 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen
– 5MP rear camera w/o flash
– 1GB RAM, 4GB ROM
– 32GB microSD card support
– 1980mAh battery

Less than 30% of Indians own smartphones, meaning there is huge potential for anyone willing to play in the low- to mid-range scene. Google may have passed it on to Lenovo, but Motorola’s show of strength as a brand with a unique identity makes its a worthy rival in the aforementioned segment.

Assuming that most folks will always move on to better (and more expensive) options if their wallets permit it, fans will be lapping up high-end Motorola devices with little hesitation if the company ever decides to go in this direction with the Moto branding.
