Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 goes up in flames in Bengaluru [Update]

UPDATE: Xiaomi has sent out a statement on the matter, decrying the video as fake. You can read more about it in our follow-up report here.

An alleged video of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 going up in flames has gone viral today, although it’s not clear yet whether the phone in the footage is indeed the Redmi Note 4. The owner, a Bengaluru man named Arjun, was apparently in a shop when the blast occurred.

As per Tech Case, the incident occurred on July 17. Arjun apparently wanted to get a SIM card inserted and handed his Redmi Note 4 over to a shop boy for this purpose. As per the video below, the device erupts into flames just moments after the employee lays his hands on the smartphone.

The shop boy immediately began stamping the alleged Redmi Note 4 until the fire died down and there was nothing left but smoke and a severely damaged handset. Nobody was injured during the entire ordeal. Arjun supposedly submitted his phone to a Xiaomi service center and later filed a police complaint when he didn’t get a response.

Xiaomi India has now gone into damage control mode. It told Phone Radar that it’s already gotten in touch with the customer and replaced the destroyed unit with a new one. It’s possible the video is unrelated to the incident and could be of another phone since the owner in the video is bald, but the one featured in Tech Case’s report has hair.

If true, the case is pretty unusual since smartphones usually explode when there’s a third-party charger or battery involved. The Galaxy Note 7 used to spontaneously explode too, the result of a design flaw. This appears to be the first Redmi Note 4 to explode in the months since its launch, so it’s probably not a wide-reaching problem.
