Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship to ship with fingerprint scanner

We’re pretty far away from the launch of Xiaomi’s Mi 5 flagship smartphone, but word that’s making the rounds right now is that this particular device could come with a fingerprint scanner onboard. This no doubt allow will allow the handset to better compete with its contemporaries like the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.

There is no concrete report on this matter, but it has received credibility due to a recent patent filing about the Xiaomi Mi 5 with China’s State Intellectual Property Office. A version of this application was released by MyDrivers recently, a translation of which reveals that a phone from the company features bottom fingerprint sensors and an optical sensor.

There is also a mention of an additional glass layer on top the sensor to protect its components. A similar approach is also taken by Apple with its Touch ID sensor that’s covered by Sapphire glass. The fact that Xiaomi Mi 5 has the company pushing for a patent for this fingerprint scanner means that it won’t have to license it from any other OEM.
