Xiaomi Mi 5 hits India at Rs 24999

The Xiaomi Mi 5 has finally made its way to India, with the company choosing to launch only the base variant of the handset here. The brand had launched 3 versions of the smartphone during its international unveiling at the MWC over a month ago.

Only the 32GB of ROM and 3GB of RAM model of the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be available in India as of now. It’s priced at Rs 24999, a tad higher than earlier estimations. This version features a 3D glass body paired with a metal frame. There’s no word on whether the 3GB/64GB or Ceramic 4GB/128GB Pro variant will be sold in the nation anytime soon.

As for availability, Xiaomi has chosen to vend its flagship handset via a flash sale through its own website on April 6. It’ll hit other retailers after a couple of weeks. The brand is probably hoping to replicate the success the phone had in China, where it had garnered over 16 million registrations for its first round of vending.

The chances of the Mi 5 managing to do so are pretty good, given the solid mix of high-end specs at a mid-range cost. The company asserts that the device is the first smartphone in India to run the Snapdragon 820 processor, something which Samsung could have staked a claim to if it hadn’t launched the Galaxy S7 with its own Exynos 8890 CPU here.
