WhatsApp presses Play and then Pause on free voice calling feature for Android

It looks like the free WhatsApp voice calling feature is almost ready to make its official debut around the globe as reports are flooding in that the service started rolling out for Android users worldwide. Well, not everyone was seen receiving the latest on offer, but a small trick was available to enable the VoIP service on any account.

Android Police is reporting that a few users spotted the voice calling option active on their devices. And if you were one of them, you could have helped others enable the capability by simply giving them a call from within the application. However, it looks like WhatsApp has blocked this capability, which means that it isn’t really ready for a full roll-out and the company could have just been testing to see if its servers were functioning.

WhatsApp Voice Calling

According to reports, you’ll need the WhatsApp 2.11.531 app which is available from the official website or the latest release on the Play store (version 2.11.528) for the voice calling option to work. We’ve already seen the new feature in action as screenshots have been leaked online a couple of times already.

We’ve also learned that the service will function on both 2G and 3G networks. With the new feature active, you’ll notice that the UI has been modified to show three different tabs, one for chats, a second for calls and a third for contacts. WhatsApp’s biggest competitor in India, Hike, has already launched its own voice calling feature, but the former is still taking its time to bring in this option.

Well, at least we know that WhatsApp’s voice calling support is almost ready for the masses and we could see a full roll-out take place in the coming days.
