WhatsApp voice calling feature out for all Android users now

There is good news for those WhatsApp users who could not lay their hands on the free voice calling feature since everyone on Android can now get it by simply updating the software. This new VoIP function has been around been in the beta testing stage for months and was seen to be getting activated on an ‘invite only’ basis.

According to sources at Android Police, in order to receive the calling feature, folks are required to download the application’s latest 2.12.19 version from the official WhatsApp website or from APK Mirror. If the apk file is being used, then the ‘Unknown Sources’ security option of the smartphone must be enabled during installation. Once it is completed, the app’s interface will show the new Call tab. The very same functionality for iOS devices will apparently soon be available too.

Those who are wondering what the Internet-based voice calling function offers, the name itself is self-explanatory. The Call tab appears as a separate option alongside the Chats and Contacts windows on the WhatsApp homescreen. The application gives a log of incoming, outgoing and missed calls. Calls can be placed while chatting to someone or by selecting a number from the Contacts list. However, if the recipient doesn’t have the updated version of the app, then the call will fail to get through and a notification will show up.

In case a person has switched off their Internet connection, the phone will ring. But the call will obviously not be answered and it will appears as a missed call to the intended receiver once they comes online. Like common voice calling application, the Call function in WhatsApp lets you turn on the speakerphone, mute the microphone, hang up and see the duration of a call.

The open access to the free voice calling feature has not yet been officially announced by WhatsApp. In the UAE, this VoIP function has already been blocked by major network provider, Etisalat. The Indian telecom industry is yet to react to this free voice call service offered by the Facebook-owned app.
