WhatsApp users, you can’t lie anymore about not having read messages

The developers behind WhatsApp have gone on to quietly release a new feature which lets you know if the person to whom you’ve sent a message has read it or not. There are no big visual changes in the app due to this. It’s just that the check marks which show you the status of your messages turn blue to signify that the recipient has read them.

This new feature has been aimed at all versions of WhatsApp, and should appear to everyone soon. Prior to its arrival, the app attached two check marks to each message deployed in order to let the sender know about its status. While the first check mark signified that the message had been sent, the second one was to indicate that it had reached the recipient’s device.

But now onwards, when both these check marks turn blue, it implies that the message has been read. And what about messages that are sent in group chats? In an updated FAQ section on its website, WhatsApp has made it clear that the single check mark that’s affixed to your group messages will turn blue once everyone who is part of it has read them.

The ‘Last seen at’ feature on WhatsApp used to be the default tool for checking if a person has received a message or not in the days gone by. However, several ways were discovered to bypass this feature and keep the sender hanging. Not to mention that a recent update gave users an option to switch off the ‘Last seen at’ function completely. It’s hence that the new addition will prove to be extremely useful for those who employ the popular instant messaging service regularly.
