Vodafone to debut 4G services by year-end

Vodafone is all set to kickstart its 4G services in India by the end of the year, around the same time as rival Reliance Jio’s own launch of the high-speed network in December. The company plans to roll it out in phases with places like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Kolkata and Delhi part of the first wave of cities to get it.

The UK-based telecom provider claims these metropolitan areas account for over 50% of its data traffic. The commencement of 4G in the country follows the successful trialing of the LTE service in select circles some time ago. Vodafone says it has joined forces with top international technology infrastructure suppliers for the network launch.

The brand clarified that it would launch pan-India 4G services at some point but did not give a clear timeline as to when. The company thinks its experience starting the service globally in over 18 countries has helped it understand the needs of customers. Vodafone currently has over 20 million consumers of the high-speed network across the world.

The telecom operator has further begun the process of expanding its 3G network to 7 circles consisting of UP West, Odisha, Kerala, the North-East, Karnataka, Assam and Rajasthan. Vodafone will then have a presence in over 16 circles across the nation. It had earlier relied on roaming arrangements with other companies to offer 3G in those areas.

Vodafone further elaborated on its activities for the past few months, saying it had undergone many steps to keep its radio networks and switching systems up-to-date.
