Buying a mobile phone online is nothing new, but getting up in the early hours before dawn to order a particular handset offers a different high altogether. Verizon Wireless experienced record sales of the Apple iPhone 4 within the first few hours when it went up for pre-order on the carrier’s website. The company then had to suspend online sales of the iPhone 4 to existing customers.

The carrier claims to have sold more phones in just the first two hours compared to any other first day launch in their history of sales. Most initial orders were placed by customers during the early hours of 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. Apart from that, the iPhone 4 will also made available for pre-ordering through the Apple Store starting from February 9.

“I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day,” shared Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. “Yesterday’s launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America.”

The company has also tried to reassure the hopeful by stating that there will be plenty of other opportunities to become owners of the phone through Verizon’s network. On February 10, the iPhone 4 will be launched at 7 a.m. in 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores for the general public.

What’s more, the device will be available at the Apple store, Best Buy and some Walmart stores too.
