Verizon sparks Kindle onto Android smartphones

Kindle for Android

Verizon last captured our eye just yesterday when a rumor emerged about the Palm Pre 2 handset allegedly slipping in through the network carrier. Now the company has joined hands with Amazon.com to unveil the Kindle reading experience across Android smartphones and is slated to touch a wider range of devices shortly.

Kindle for Android comes already embedded into three handsets namely Samsung Fascinate, Droid X and Droid 2 by Motorola. Through this inclusion, over 700,000 books are stocked up in the Kindle Store and available to users. The company reveals that the offering is easy to spot on the application screen through the 4 inch super AMOLED touchscreen display of the Samsung Fascinate.

“We’re very excited to bring Kindle for Android directly to Verizon Wireless customers,” commented Jennifer Byrne, executive director, business development and partnerships for Verizon Wireless. “Our smartphones come with great screens that make buying and reading books simple and easy, and Amazon’s commitment to reading and offering a seamless customer experience is directly in line with what our customers want.”

“Customers are already telling us they love Kindle for Android, and we think they are going to be excited to get their Verizon Wireless phones and other devices preloaded with the Kindle app,” stated Dave Limp, vice president, Kindle. “We are thrilled to be working with such an innovative company as Verizon Wireless and are excited to have Kindle for Android on these three phones and on other devices down the road.”

Reading enthusiasts can avail of all their desired books as well as browse and download them via the Android-enabled phone. Whispersync technology from Amazon syncs bookmarks the place where they last read while the Kindle Worry-Free Archive automatically backs up the purchased books online for re-downloaded. Among the wide array of books, there are new releases as well as 107 of 111 New York Times bestsellers.

The app can be accessed from the Android Market by typing in the term ‘Kindle’.
