Updating status on Facebook can be therapeutic: Research

All those of you who are obsessed with Facebook and update statuses much too frequently, will be glad to hear that what you are doing is a form of self-therapy. A study conducted by Dr. Theresa Sauter from Queensland University of Technology in Australia has revealed that social networking websites are indeed therapeutic.

According to the research, people are constantly invited to share their view, achievements, mistakes and more by social networking sites like Facebook and this is exactly the reason why these portals give users a chance to reflect on their own behavior. Updating these sites is as good as keeping a diary, but the only difference is that it is on a social platform.

Moreover, by typing out their thoughts, people can take a moment to understand exactly how they feel and this can also lead to improvements in themselves. Letting the world know about their achievements and mistakes is again therapeutic as they show that users are doing well and know where they are going wrong.

On the other hand, these updates are read by friends and acquaintances who in turn, offer their feedback and views which could be of much help. These practices of self-writing have been around for ages, but initially they were limited to public figures. It is the social networking websites that allow everyone to voice their views publicly.

This research by Dr. Saunter goes on to prove that posting on Facebook is not just a shallow narcissistic practice, but have deeper therapeutic advantages as well.
