UC Browser revamped, announces partnership with Colors TV

Alibaba-owned UCWeb has launched a new version of its UC Browser alongside a content partnership with Colors TV. The mobile gateway now comes integrated with the company’s news app UC News. According to StatCounter, the browser is one of the top portals in India, serving around 80 million monthly active users.

UC News is an India-specific feature placed to get a user’s complete attention in the updated UC Browser. The service allows you to personalize news stories and gives more information based on the subjects chosen. Trending topics are picked up using keywords from Facebook and Twitter.

The UC Browser update is already facing flak from regular users. Most of the complaints on the Google Play Store are centered on the fact that the news feature cannot be disabled. It also consumes additional data; much to the irritation of loyalists who only want a clean and simple browser minus the frivolities. UCWeb defended itself by saying that the new version will provide relevant content to consumers.

UC Browser currently functions only in English and Hindi but support for more regional languages might be in the pipeline. The company is promoting it as a content aggregator platform and not just a regular browser. The mobile gateway’s main focus is on entertainment, as UCWeb claims the sector forms over 40 percent of the news consumed in Maharashtra.

Speaking of the partnership with Colors TV, UCWeb will showcase 4 shows namely Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Bigg Boss, Comedy Nights Live and 24 across the developer’s apps. The initial two will include a special fan zone with behind-the-scenes videos available for viewing. A special game will be available on the 9Apps app store for the series 24.

The new version of UC Browser can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
