Ubuntu Edge crowdfunding breaks records but still not enough, what now?

Asking the world to raise $32,000,000 for building a superphone was an ambitious effort from Canonical for its Ubuntu Edge phone, and as expected, the campaign has come a cropper, not even managing to raise half of that amount. However, with $12,812,776 having been raised till yesterday, the project is a record breaker by all means, as no crowdfunding campaign has ever been able to garner such a shipload of money in history.

The question that still remains raised is what will become of the money that has already been contributed, and will the Ubuntu Edge still manage to manifest ever, let alone next year? A big possibility is that of some manufacturer pumping in its own dollars in order to take the dream home. Another option is for Canonical’s millionaire founder Mark Shuttleworth to loosen his pockets a bit. Although he has revealed nothing of this nature through his Indigogo update, the possibility cannot be ruled out.

Ubuntu Edge

The company’s vision for the Ubuntu Edge involves a dual booting phone which can run Android as well as Ubuntu mobile. Moreover, it also plans on making the device able boot Ubuntu Desktop when connected to a screen. That sort of a system mandates the 4GB RAM that its makers hope to integrate into it. Furthermore, they’ve kept the display simple by granting it a 4.5-inch HD touch panel possessing Sapphire Glass protection. Stereo speakers, a Silicon-anode Li-ion battery, Dual-LTE and GSM connectivity and a slick design are some of its other attributes.

For now, the Ubuntu Edge hype has somewhat been hampered but we expect new announcements in the future. We’ll bring you the latest details right here on Mobiletor.
