Ubiquisys pioneers the world’s first attocell for international travelers

While travelling abroad, one of the most irksome problems is making phone calls back home to family and friends. Ubiquisys in its attempt to offset these problems has introduced the world’s first attocell which acts as a personal femtocell. Providing mobile service anywhere in the world, the accompaniment allows calls to be made and received as though on the home country network.

Although the attocell was specially designed to be used with the iPhone, it has also been tested with Backberry, Nokia and Android-based smartphones and should also work with any 3G smartphone. The device can be plugged into user’s Internet-enabled laptop USB port, which provides power. The device examines the IP and radio environment to ascertain which country it is located in and sets up 3G radio power accordingly that complies with the licensed levels.

“At Ubiquisys we are constantly developing new ways to harness intelligent cell technology,” added Chris Gilbert, CEO Ubiquisys. “The attocell innovation is a direct response to meet a specific requirement from mobile operators.”

In certain countries the devices’s range might be as low as 5mm while in other countries it might be large enough to cover an entire room. Like the company’s femtocells, this high-end device keeps checking its radio environment to avoid any interference with local existing mobile networks. In the 5mm mode users can keep their iPhone right on top of the device and the phone gets connected automatically, enabling users to place calls via speakerphone or a wired headset.

Ubiquisys is in discussions with many mobile phone operators and will showcase the attocell at February’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
