Uber India gets ‘Request a Ride for Others’ feature

Uber has rolled out a ‘Request a Ride for Others’ feature for India that allows you to book a cab for a person not having the application. This new option is available in the latest version of the app. The service aims to grant access to reliable transportation for those who need it the most but cannot get it, like senior citizens.

The procedure for availing the feature has similarities to the current method of getting cabs. Upon opening Uber, you will have to drop a pin or enter the pickup location manually. The app will then prompt you to choose who the ride is for. Here you can select the option of summoning it for yourself or others. When choosing for someone else, you will have to enter the phone number manually or share their contact from your phonebook.

After completing that, Uber will send two SMSes. One will have the employee and car information and the other will contain a link to track the journey. The rider’s number will be sent to the driver to co-ordinate the pickup. Payment can be done by the passenger at the destination or by the user booking it online.

The company also launched another India-specific feature called ‘Dial an Uber.’ It allows you to book a cab using the mobile site via online registration. This takes into consideration the use of budget smartphones with limited memory and costly or low-speed data that discourages downloading of the app.

Uber also allows you to get cabs from Google Maps. It displays a range of options to choose from in the ride tab. However, you need the app installed to make use of this feature.
