Apple headphones will not support 3.5mm jacks, says rumor

Apple is looking to augment the audio experience on its iPhone and other devices by allowing manufacturers to develop headphones that connect directly to the Lightning port. A 3.5mm jack has been a standard for audio output on mobile devices, but it does have its limitations and allowing accessories to connect via the proprietary port also brings in numerous advantages.

9To5Mac has managed to spot changes in the MFi program where a new specification states the possibility of connecting headphones via the Lightning connector. This capability hasn’t been launched as yet, but it’s expected to arrive via a future software update and support devices running Apple iOS7.1 and later. The report further notes that devices will be able to output lossless stereo audio at 48kHz and receive 48kHz digital mono input.

Such headphones will even have microphones onboard and offer the usual remote controls to adjust the volume and change tracks as well as advanced features such as launch specific apps. These peripherals will draw power from the connected device and could also be used to juice them up. 9To5Mac notes that the headphones will be able to receive firmware updates as well.

Apple is reportedly permitting two configurations. With standard Lightning headphones, manufacturers will be able to include minimum components along with a digital-to-analog converter, while advanced ones enable use of active noise cancellation, digital signal processors and more. Now that Apple has acquired Beats, it’s safe to assume that the next iPhone(s) will come with a pair of earphones from the newly purchased company, probably with the Lightning connector design.

So basically, if you have a liking for Apple earphones, there’s a high chance that they might come with a Lightning connector and hence, won’t be supported on 3.5mm audio jacks.
