The New York Times brings in Press Engine platform for Publishers on iPhone

Text NYTC iPhoneNot so long ago, CNN updated iPhone users with the latest worldwide news with the International News application. The New York Times is the latest to mark its presence by introducing the Press Engine service. This technology and design solution enables publishers and media organizations to display their content in new platforms.

Starting with the iPhone and iPad applications, The Dallas Morning News, The Providence Journal and The Press-Enterprise are the first publishers of this service for licensing. This service will help clients in leveraging The Times’s experience to create new digital products and increase readership loyalty. It further builds an extended subscription model and offers new opportunities for advertisers as well.

“Publishers will receive feature-rich applications based on The Times’s experience developing and designing mobile technology and apps. We are providing our expertise in news reader applications to allow publishers of all sizes to offer their readers elegant applications for iPhone and iPad devices,” commented Michael Greenspon, general manager, The New York Times News Services.

With this service, users can enjoy partial offline reading of articles and can also store it on their devices. Along with the share functionality, this platform allows users to visit the photo gallery, audio and video of the articles. They can read either in horizontal or vertical mode. Besides, the service also features simple search and device-standard advertising units.

Edward Roussel, digital editor, Telegraph Media Group, remarked, “The pace of change in digital technology means that media companies will increasingly be looking at ways of collaborating in order to create world-class consumer experiences. The New York Times has a global reputation for innovation and excellence in technology, and Press Engine offers an opportunity to harness that expertise to showcase Telegraph content on iPad and iPhone devices.”

“Introducing new digital platforms is one of the ways that The Dallas Morning News is shaping its portfolio to provide compelling, relevant content through the vehicles readers want. Press Engine puts The Times’s technological savvy to work for us, delivering premier news reader applications that allow advertisers to reach our engaged audiences where they live, work and play,” explained, John McKeon, president and general manager of The Dallas Morning News.

Various more New York Times company-owned newspapers like the International Herald Tribune, The Gainesville Sun and The Lakeland Ledger are also expected to participate in the product launch. With this service, publishers can control and own any advertising and subscription revenue on their applications. By paying a one-time license fee and monthly maintenance, clients will then also have the ability to opt for future upgrades.

The Press Engine service will be made available in the fourth quarter of 2010.
