Steelcase Gesture chair costs more than Rs 60,000, will let you slump comfortably

In case you missed it, the Steelcase Gesture was unveiled in India a few weeks ago and it will be launched into the market in early 2014. You’re wondering why you should pay more than Rs 60,000 for a chair, right? Well, it’s been designed with the thought ‘What if people were given chairs that encouraged motion and rather than forced to them to hold a pose?’ according to the company.

Employees don’t use just desktop PCs at the office nowadays. A lot of folks also spend some part of their work day on laptops, smartphones, tablets and what not. After surveying over 2000 people in 11 countries across the globe, Steelcase has identified 9 new postures we’ve adopted mainly because of the technological evolution.

Steelcase Gesture

The Draw: That’s when you lean back in your seat and pull your device closer to you.

The Text: This is when you pull your arms close to your body to text someone on your smartphone.

The Strunch: Are you in the habit of pushing your notebook further away from you, leaning in to look at the screen and propping yourself up on your elbows? You’re a ‘struncher.’

The Cocoon: That’s when you put your feet up on your seat and work with your tablet, laptop or smartphone resting on your thighs.

The other positions described by Steelcase include the Multi-Device, the Swipe, the Take It In, the Smart Lean and the Trance. They’re all variations of the postures we use when seated at our workstations. The chairs provided to employees in most offices are explained to cause pain and long-term injuries since they don’t support such natural motions of the body.

The Gesture is created to accommodate all kinds of postures. It goes up and down, it supports leaning to one side while sitting, the armrests can be moved about and so on and so forth. The base model of the chair may cost around Rs 62,000, while custom versions could go up to Rs 1,00,000 or above.
