Sony Xperia ICS update plans announced, Xperia Play not in the race

ICS 10

The Sony Xperia ICS update information has been just been released for phones operating on previous versions of Google’s mobile OS. It’d be good to note that there are a few changes in the upgrade plans which were announced earlier.

First off, the ICS update for the Xperia NXT range will continue as per schedule. By the end of June, the Xperia S should receive the latest OS version. The Xperia P will get it soon after, while Xperia U users will have to wait till Q3 before getting Android 4.0.

“Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia Play,” states a post on the official Xperia blog.

As far as the phones released in 2011 are concerned, the Xperia pro, active, arc, mini, neo, mini pro and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will be treated to ICS starting from the following week. The software to be made available on these devices is Android 4.0.4, which will also be rolled out to the Xperia arc S, neo V and ray handsets that received Android 4.0.3 last month. The Xperia Play will not receive the ICS upgrade as the developer team believes that gaming experiences will not be as smooth on the upgraded version.

As stated above, all the aforesaid phones except for the Xperia Play, are scheduled to receive the Sony Xperia ICS update.
