Sony PlayStation 4 coming to India on Jan 6 for Rs 39,990

Throwing gamers across India into a frenzy, Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 4 (PS4) for a price of Rs 39,990. Yes, it’s hefty seeing as the PS3 is almost being sold at half that cost presently. But if you want the latest and greatest gaming console from Sony, Rs 40,000 it’ll be.

Fans will be able to lay hands on the PS4 starting from January 6, 2014. But as far as we can tell, few are pleased with the price attached to the console. With all the additional taxes and what not, it’s true that India does pay a lot for its imports. And gamers aren’t the only ones who feel the pinch.

PS4 features you should know about:

The device is embedded with a low-power AMD Jaguar processor having eight x86-64 cores and a next-generation Radeon-based 1.84 TFLOPS GPU. It runs on 8GB of RAM and has 500GB storage space. Also onboard are two USB 3.0 ports, an AUX port, HDMI out, a Blu-Ray/DVD drive (read only), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity.

Apart from main black colored unit, there’s the DualShock 4 controller and the optional motion-sensing camera too. The system downloads software as well as game updates in the background so that the PS4 is always ready. You can also play a title as it is being downloaded from the PS Store.

You won’t be able to pop your PS3 discs into the PS4. But OnLive will let users play their old titles on the new console sometime next year. Sharing your triumphs via Facebook, Twitch, Ustream and Twitter has been enabled. The PS Camera will come in handy for those who want to stream live gameplay, chat or record walkthroughs.

So what do you think? Are the changes enough to justify the roughly Rs 40,000 price for the PS4?
