Skype update brings Bollywood Mojis, Indian emoticons

Skype has partnered with Yash Raj Films and ErosNow to release a new set of Bollywood Mojis to cater to its Indian user base. The update is rolling out now for Android, Windows Desktop and Phone, Mac and iOS.

Skype introduced its Mojis feature back in September this year. It’s essentially short gif-like video clips with audio which can be directly inserted into a chat window. The first set of emoticons were sourced from companies like Universal Studios and the BBC. It contained clips from a range of movies and TV shows such as Jurassic Park, Despicable Me and The Office.

The new Bollywood Mojis come with various Yash Raj and Eros films like Dhoom 2 and 3, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Devdas, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and RA one. For those wondering how the studios benefit from this, an option to watch the movie appears next to the clip sent. It’s a convenient form of promotion for ErosNow, the on-demand entertainment platform of its parent company.

Along with Bollywood Mojis, Skype has also added a new group of India-focused emoticons to represent local gestures, holidays, food, sports and common expressions such as cricket and a speeding autorickshaw. It’ll be competing with homegrown instant messaging apps like Hike in that area, which currently boasts of 5000 stickers in 30 regional languages.
