Samsung’s new 512GB SSD is smaller than postage stamp

Heralding the rise of even thinner laptops of the future is the new 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD which has just been put into mass production from Samsung. This particular storage device is highlighted by the fact that its body happens to be smaller than the size of an average postage stamp.

Despite this, it somehow manages to offer ‘triple the performance of a typical SATA SSD’ according to Jung-bae Lee, Samsung’s senior vice president of memory product planning & application engineering team. It has been designed to make possible ultra-thin notebooks, and might even find its way into the next-gen MacBook.

This Samsung SSD is able to cough up read and write speeds of a whopping 1500MB/s and 900MB/s, respectively. To put things in perspective, it can transfer a 5GB video file in the span of just three seconds. The exact size of the new NVMe PCIe SSD from Samsung has been revealed to be 20 x 16 x 1.5mm. And to no surprise, it weighs in at just 1 gram.

It has been build on a single ball grid array (BGA) package, and contains all SSD essentials like NAND flash memory, a DRAM and a controller. To be exact, it comes with Samsung’s 48-layer 256-gigabit V-NAND flash chips, one 20-nanometer 4GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM chip and a high-performance Samsung controller.

512GB is not the only storage option available with this new offering. Buyers will also be able to purchase it in 128GB and 256GB choices. The entire volume of this SSD is around a hundredth of a 2.5-inch SSD or HDD, while its surface area is about a fifth of an M.2 SSD.
