Samsung’s standalone smartwatch could work without a connected phone in tow

A standalone smartwatch could be arriving from Samsung this June and it may just be called the Gear 2 Solo, a name that was unearthed by a previous story about the connected phone-shunning wearable. It’s bigger news than you think it is considering that most people with smartphones simply cannot live without them. And to think that the South Korean company is actually thinking of replacing this breed of gadgets, the horror!

The standalone Samsung smartwatch could quite well be called the Samsung Gear 2 Solo and come with a slot for a SIM card. This could mean that you won’t have to hook up the wearable with your phone in order to make or receive calls. Most importantly, the device will help Samsung shake off the ‘Apple follower’ tag it’s been labeled with by those who think copying the iPhone maker is its only product roadmap plan.

While referring to a recent post on Wall Street Journal, Ars Technica said that Samsung will have lots of problems to deal with when it comes to a smartwatch working independent of a handset. It would require a separate data plan and stuffing cellular as well as Wi-Fi parts into it could make it a bulky wearable. On top of that, it may end up as a power hungry gadget which needs to be charged more often as compared to a smartphone unless it manages to pack in a small battery with high capacity.

Our gripe with a gizmo such as this would be the fact that staying entertained on the move will mostly be out of the question if you use your phone to watch content or play games a lot. If Samsung thinks the Gear 2 Solo will make for a good secondary communications device, then chances are, there’s little hope for since it will be battling alternatives like Google Glass which could beam all kinds of stuff right onto your eyeballs.

Apparently, the standalone Samsung smartwatch will feature a GPS antenna, a camera and a heart rate monitor apart from the SIM card slot we mentioned above. And it’s supposedly going to make its debut next month, as we noted earlier. Bet it won’t look as pretty as the Moto 360 Android Wear device which is expected to land in July.
