Samsung Milk Music streaming service squeezes the best of radio onto Galaxy phones

Samsung Milk Music is a strange name for an Internet radio streaming service, but that’s exactly what it is. And what’s more, the company has released it for its Galaxy range of phones only to make you feel bad about carrying any other handset. The new product was announced at the SXSW, an annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival.

If you’re not sure why Samsung is getting into the music scene with its new offering, then you’ve missed the company’s heavy hints about wanting to be more than just a device manufacturer. It wants in on the software and apps game too. Milk Music is downloadable via Google Play Store from here.

The Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 will be compatible with the application in question. Once you download and launch the tool, there won’t be any registration obligations to fulfill and you can start using it right away.

Leaning on Slacker, Samsung’s service opens up over 200 radio stations by default. If you want to add more variety to the music, the application has a sort of tuner which lets users adjust the frequency for how often new, popular and favorite songs are played via their customized radio experience.

There’s also a Spotlight feature which is a roster of songs picked by ‘music tastemakers and influencers’ just for users. For a limited time period, Samsung is extending Milk Music for free. It comes without ads, though the company appears to be considering it for the future.
