Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge: Top features review

With pre-orders of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge having gone live in India, two of the biggest smartphones of this year are all set to enter the country’s market. April 10 is the exact date on which they will be released by the South Korean company, and if you’re finding it difficult to decide whether or not to buy either one of them, let us help you a bit.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge mark a change in the design strategy which the manufacturer has been using for its smartphones since quite a few years. Plastic materials have been replaced with a metal unibody design to bring it more in line with what the extremely popular iPhones have on offer.

But a few sacrifices have been made in order to make this happen as well. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge do not feature removable batteries and moreover, they don’t even kick in microSD card slots. This means that you’ll have to be extra careful while choosing whether to go for the 32GB, 64B or the 128GB options.

On the upside, the company has modified its TouchWiz software add-on to feature less bloatware. Useless apps which you are forced to live with when you buy a phone from Samsung have been removed partly, making way for some useful Microsoft utilities.

Coming to the hardware, both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge happen to offer state of the art components. They are powered by an LTE-supporting Exynos 7420 chipset bearing a 64-bit architecture and an octa core CPU. Additionally, there’s 3GB worth of RAM and a Mali-T760 GPU assisting this setup. If early reports are to be believed, this processor is currently tearing up benchmark scores by huge margins.

The cameras on these two Samsung smartphones are worth applauding as well. A 16MP shooter rests on their rear surfaces, offering optical image stabilization and 4K video support, among other things. Selfie enthusiasts will be pleased to know that their front cameras kick in 5MP sensors and produce 1080p full HD videos.

The S6 and S6 edge retain the main highlights of their predecessor – the fingerprint scanner and the heart rate monitor. While the Galaxy S6 offers a 2550mAh battery, the S6 edge goes for a 2600mAh unit. It remains to be seen how these power packs perform during daily use though.

The difference between these two phones
Samsung has felt the need to introduce two flagships this year instead of one owing perhaps to the fact that it wasn’t sure how the S6 edge will be treated by the audience. That’s because instead of a conventional display, this device grabs a curved panel that’s wrapped along the sides of its body. This extra screen estate is used by the phone to offer additional functions as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 on the other hand, bears a straight-up flat panel for those who’re not interested in the curved screen gimmick. Both these smartphones grab 5.1-inch Super AMOLED panels that offer their visuals in a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution.

Here’s a neat look at the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge:

– Display: 5.1-inch, 1440 x 2560 pixels
– OS: Android 5.0 Lollipop (Upgradable)
– Processor: Octa core Exynos 7420
– Memory: 3GB RAM, 32GB/64GB/128GB storage options(no expandable storage)
