Ringing Bells to start Freedom 251 deliveries from June 30

Ringing Bells is planning to start deliveries of the Freedom 251 from June 30, according to a new interview with its founder and CEO Mohit Goel. The Rs 251 phone has gained a notorious reputation here thanks to the numerous controversies which have dogged the handset since its announcement.

To recall, Goel had initially declared that the Freedom 251 would be delivered to customers starting from June 28 just a few weeks ago. He appears to have changed his mind and delayed the release by 2 days for unknown reasons.

Goel claims that Ringing Bells is ready to ship nearly 2 lakh unit of the phone in the first phase of delivery. He told IANS that he will open up registrations again after this stage is completed. The firm had been looking to hand over 25 lakh handsets before June 30, but its plans went awry when it received 7 crore registrations in 3 days.

Goel says that the brand has learned from its mistakes and went silent till it was ready with the finished Freedom 251. The CEO asserted that the company is facing a loss of Rs 140 – Rs 150 per unit. However, he hopes it’ll still manage to turn a profit based on volumes.

Goel is also going down the Digital India and Make In India route, stating that the Freedom 251 will help the dream of connecting rural and poor Indians. The phone was apparently manufactured at Haridwar. The company is looking to sell 2 lakh units every month.

Ringing Bells is also looking beyond the Freedom 251 to the future, with plans to launch a 32-inch HD LED TV which will also be sold under the Freedom moniker. It’ll be announced in the first week of July and vend for less than Rs 10000.
