Ringing Bells to kickstart Freedom 251 deliveries on June 28

Ringing Bells is back in the news again thanks to the company’s director Mohit Goel announcing that it’s planning to deliver the Freedom 251 to customers from June 28. The phone ran into a major controversy upon its launch and inspired a series of copycats looking to claim the moniker of being the cheapest Android phone in the world.

As per PTI, Goel has stated that the shipments for the Freedom 251 will begin on a cash-on-delivery (COD) basis from June 28 for customers who had placed an order for it earlier. To recall, the brand had launched the phone back in February to great fanfare.

The Freedom 251 quickly inspired the ire of several groups, from other handset makers to the government. The latter even started an investigation into the firm via the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) and Income Tax department. The results of the ongoing matter have not been made public yet.

This suspicious atmosphere eventually resulted in Ringing Bells refunding all 30000 customers who paid for the phone. It then promised to deliver the handset to them via COD instead. Meanwhile, Adcom threatened to sue the company to save its own reputation. It alleged that the brand had bought phones worth Rs 3600 from it and was not aware of the plan to re-sell the phones priced at Rs 251.

Ringing Bells for its part has explained away the cheap cost of the handset by asserting that it depends on a combination of different factors such as economies of scale, Make in India manufacturing, e-commerce sales, and innovative marketing.
