Reliance Jio forces Vodafone to offer free roaming starting Diwali

Vodafone India is trying to counter the threat that is Reliance Jio by extending free roaming on incoming calls starting from Diwali. The latter broke into the telecom industry only in September with an offer of free voice calls, SMS and data to subscribers.

Ever since then, network operators have been hard pressed to keep users interested with various interesting deals. You could say that Airtel especially has risen to the challenge with all it’s got. But more on that later. Right now, it’s Vodafone we’re talking about.

Starting from the end of October, Vodafone subscribers traveling anywhere within India need not worry about paying for roaming on incoming calls. The operator says that the roll-out celebrates its 200 million user milestone; but it’s more likely to do with Jio’s growing popularity than anything else.

In addition to this, the company also announced an International Roaming Daily scheme and doubling of the monthly available data for Vodafone Red customers. Towards the end of September last month, the telco was seen offering 10GB data for the price of 1GB for three months on new 4G handsets.

Currently, Reliance Jio is said to be adding over a million folks a day to its customer base. With the telecom regulatory authority having declared the Mukesh Ambani company’s Welcome Offer to be anything but predatory, telcos have no choice but to play the game until December 31 at least.

Although the Jio has stated that users would get free voice calls for life, it may be pushing its luck. So it’ll be interesting to see whether it can hold onto its subscribers once the Welcome Offer expires.
