Reliance Jio expands 4G trials to the public via invite system

Reliance Jio has now decided to expand the trial launch of its 4G platform to the public after months of evaluating it among its own employees. Unfortunately, the only way to get on the network is through a pesky invite system.

According to the Economic Times, Reliance Jio is now allowing its staff to send the coveted invite to a maximum of 10 people each. The chosen few will have to buy a Lyf handset in order to avail the offer, after which they’re set to get free unlimited 4G voice and data services for 3 months.

The individuals will also get free access to Jio apps for 90 days. The idea is similar to LeEco’s new LeEco Membership ecosystem, with applications such as Jio On-Demand, Jio Play, Jio Mags, Jio Beats, Jio Security, Jio Drive, and Jio XpressNews to cover anyone’s video and music streaming needs.

Reliance Jio had previously stated that its LTE services were being tested by nearly 500000 consumers of which a large number were accessing it through a Lyf handset. It plans to kickstart its full-scale commercial operations when its user base increases to a couple of million consumers. This will probably come to pass by the end of 2016.

The new invite scheme is a clever way to increase sales of its Lyf series of affordable smartphones. The lineup has done well for itself so far. Counterpoint Research claims that it’s now the fifth biggest smartphone player in its first quarter since its debut, gathering a 7% share on the strength of the high demand for 4G phones in India.
