Reliance Jio to commercially launch 4G services on August 15

Reliance Jio is all set to finally kick-off its 4G services on August 15 going by a new report. The long-awaited commercial launch of the platform has been a long time coming and could trigger a major disruption in the Indian telecom sector.

Three insider sources told the Economic Times that Reliance Jio is launching a 4G plan called Freedom on August 15, in reference to India’s Independence day. The pack may offer free voice services combined with data which will apparently cost 25% lesser than the current schemes offered by other major players.

Putting a number to this conjecture, one source alleged that 1GB of data would set subscribers back by around Rs 80. Reliance has been going full-steam ahead with its 4G ambitions lately. It began providing its services to its employees back in December, before moving on to their friends and families in May.

Last month saw the arrival of both the official Reliance Jio website and the launch of a SIM card offer. The former allowed people to register for LTE trials, while the latter bundled a SIM card with the purchase of a Lyf handset. People who took advantage of the latter apparently got up to 3 months of free unlimited data and 4500 minutes of voice calls.

This deal was further enhanced earlier this month when Reliance decided to initiate a massive cut in cost for a number of its handsets. Thanks to the newly slashed prices, the cheapest Lyf smartphones are currently available at Rs 2999.
