Ouch! Apple iPhone 5S is more expensive in India than anywhere else in the world

The Apple iPhone 5S is at its most expensive in India than in any other place in the world, according to a study. Talk about fleecing. The data does not say that the iOS handset is costliest in this nation. But Indians do shell out the highest percentage of their disposable income over it.

The iPhone 5S’ price in Jordan is $1091.91, while its cost in India is $857.76. But the figures become interesting when the tag is pitted against the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product or market value of a nation’s good and services in a fiscal year) and an average citizen’s purchasing power.

According to information collected by MobileUnlocked, the smartphone pulls in 22.3% of per capita GDP. It’s not surprising considering that you would have to cough up more than half a lakh for it. The device puts a burden of just 0.76% on the per capita GDP in Qatar on the other hand. In the US, it shows a load of 1.36% per capita GDP.

Of course, the numbers don’t indicate how many people have bought the iPhone 5S in the entire list of 47 places. It just gives an idea of how much disposable income customers would be required to spend on it. We can bring in the fact that most who lay hands on it in India are likely to be earning reasonably well given the unreasonable price.

In such cases, the 22.3% figure would be inaccurate anyway unless we count customers who buy it on installment plans. Just some fun MobileUnlocked was having with the study, we assume.
