OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 to receive Android Marshmallow update in 2016

Owners of the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 are all set to get the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow early next year. While the switch to the new OS has been confirmed officially, there’s no specific timeline for the upgrade yet.

The news was announced by co-founder Carl Pei in a forum post on November 16. As per his declaration, the OnePlus One will begin receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the 1st quarter of 2016. Cyanogen will be pushing out this update as the device officially ships with the OS. Pei claims his company has developed a community build of OxygenOS for the handset.

He went on to say OnePlus would update the OxygenOS build for the One when sufficient time is available. As for the OnePlus 2, it is also going to get the promotion to Android 6.0 by the 1st quarter of 2016. The brand further assured fans it will add the new standard Marshmallow API (application program interface) for the fingerprint scanner.

Pei said that many users had asked OnePlus to create a custom API for the current fingerprint sensor working within OxygenOS. The China-based manufacturer has decided against doing this as it has made the choice to switch over to the standard Android M implementation directly instead. There’s no definite time frame for the newly released OnePlus X to get the new OS.

The latter is set to get system optimizations in the low battery state, UX bug fixes in Camera and a better color offset in HDR mode.
