NXP to power Sony Ericsson Android smartphones with its NFC solutions

NXP PN65 NFCWe had reported about the NFC technology being incorporated by many mobile handset manufacturers over time. NXP has now teamed up with Sony Ericsson to provide NFC solutions for their Android smartphone line-up. The technology will allow Sony Ericsson users to buy products through their mobile phones by a single tap.

NXP announced lately NFC software to be open source on the Android platform, enabling the Google Wallet application. The NXP PN65 NFC solution in particular is slated for use in Android-based smartphones. This includes the NFC radio controller, the embedded secure element and NFC software. The integrated secure element will allow the NFC technology to be employed for mobile transactions.

“Building on Sony Ericsson’s leadership in Android and mobile gaming, the integration of near field communication into our Android-based Xperia portfolio is another step in delivering the most entertaining smartphones,” mentioned Jan Uddenfeldt, Chief Technology Officer at Sony Ericsson. “NFC offers our consumers the ability to broaden their communication experience beyond the phone, and we are poised to drive the development of new, exciting and creative entertainment experiences.”

“This latest move from Sony Ericsson is another proof point of the strong momentum and potential of NFC,” commented Rick Clemmer, president and CEO, NXP Semiconductors. “Based on continued strong customer endorsements we have the opportunity to increase the sales of our NFC products 2-4 times as a percentage of total NXP revenue in the second half of 2011 from the approximately one percent it represents today. NFC offers a game-changing opportunity for mobile phone manufacturers to provide creative and innovative smartphones to their customers.”

The PN65 features advanced cryptography to deliver the highest level of security for transactions. The technology is already known to be widely used in contactless banking cards, e-passports, e-ID cards and secure access systems.

Users can share contacts, photos, songs, apps, videos and website links by tapping the devices. Multiplayer gaming too is possible with two devices connected to each other courtesy of the NFC technology.
