Nokia Normandy running Android appears in new leak, could still be on the cards

Even as news surfaced that Nokia would drop its Android project which includes multiple devices including the Normandy smartphone in favor of wearable gadgets, new leaks behind the handset are still popping up. The most recent one shows the device actually running a modified version of Google’s mobile OS.

This could actually suggest two things. Either the Nokia Normandy is still being developed and could see the light of day in the future, or what we’re seeing make the rounds online could just be leaked images of something that was. The latest picture comes via the famous EvLeaks. The image shows the Normandy handset with what appears to be the Finish giant’s own custom UI over the Android system.

Android UI

By the looks of it, the company has done away with the virtual on-screen buttons that many OEMs employ in place of physical ones. Speaking of which, there is only a single hardware button on the phone and it’s bonded to the back command. We’re guessing that Nokia has implemented gesture controls for navigating and accessing menus. The leaked image shows the Skype UI, the lockscreen which displays notifications and a gorgeous looking call interface.

The leaked image is just the start of today’s rumor. The guys over at NPU have managed to get their hands on screen grabs of a Nokia smartphone in the AnTuTU benchmark suite and of its system UI. The device goes by the A110 model number and was spotted running Android 4.4.1 KitKat. Not many details were provided, but what managed to slip out is that the phone will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (the 400 series most likely), an 854 x 480p display, dual SIM slots and a 5MP camera.

Nokia Normany

So, whether Nokia is still working on the Normandy or not, is still a mystery. We’d recommend not getting your hopes up, but what you can expect from the Finnish giant are new wearable devices in the near future.
