Nokia Maps now pre-loaded and free on Series 40 phones

Nokia Maps

Claiming to ‘put the world at the fingertips’, Nokia Maps will come pre-installed on all Series 40 phones by the company. The maps will be made available free of cost and will operate in offline mode as well.

The Series 40 phones include devices from the new Asha range which were unveiled alongside the Nokia Lumia line-up a few weeks ago. While the Lumia series marks the Finnish company’s debut venture with the Mango version of the Window Phone OS, the Asha series is made up of handsets including the Asha 303 Series 40 device.

Nokia’s mapping service does not employ GPS and is thus made available even when the user is not connected to the internet. It brings into the play network positioning system, which is aimed at saving on data as well as downloading costs. What’s more, with this functionality, the map is always and instantly accessible to users.

This free maps service currently covers over 180 countries. Visual turn-by-turn navigation is offered for around a 100 nations. Even if users would like to go online for sharing or other purposes, the maps are designed such that people can access them at reasonable rates. The company says that charges for employing the positioning service can be compared to the standard SMS rates in India.

On purchasing a new Nokia Series 40 handset, users should find it ready with a map of their own country. However, world explorers wanting to know the globe a bit more can install extra maps. This can be done free of cost through Nokia Suite.

Nokia Maps on Series 40 phones will apparently render the same level of coverage as that enjoyed by smartphone users.
