The Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone 7.8 update is out, making it the first smartphone ever to receive the upgrade. Earlier, Microsoft had given out a time frame for the launch of the OS and it is expected to be available for download sometime in January next year.
However, it seems like the handset stands to be an exception to this rule. Since those who own WP7.5 handsets cannot upgrade to WP8 due to hardware limitations, the 7.8 version has been built. Apparently, users have to undergo four levels of upgrades to finally access the updated edition on their phones.
Those who possess up-to-date devices will initially be subjected to the Nokia update for the Windows Phone which is followed by three large downloads. These comprise of 7.10.8773 to 7.10.8779, pursued by the 7.10.8783 version and finally, concluded by 7.10.8858.136.
Once the procedure is complete, Windows Phone 7.8 will be available to those who own the Lumia 800. This edition comes with customization options seen in the WP8 operating system such as resizing live tiles. Besides which, there will also be an Xbox Tile and new lock screen features amongst other additional attributes.
As per WMPoweruser, WP7.nl says that those who have been bubbling with curiosity regarding the latest edition can connect their phones to the Zune PC software while keeping their fingers crossed. This may be a hint that the upgrade which promises to give a taste of WP8 is just around the corner.
Even though Nokia Lumia 800 has been given the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade, there is no confirmation regarding how long it will take before it is made available for other phones. So those with WP7.5 who haven’t been lucky this time can rest assured their gadgets will be seeing the fresh version of the platform in the early weeks of January.
