Nokia announces developers for The Mobile Games innovation Challenge

Nokia Logo Nokia has revealed the top 10 developers for its Mobile Games Innovation Challenge. The winners will be declared later this month at an awards ceremony. A total prize value of 70,000 EUR is up for grabs for the winners! Nokia Publishing will offer pre-production contracts to the top three innovative game concepts. There is still more; the top 3 winners will be awarded 40,000 EUR, 20,000 EUR & 10,000 EUR respectively for further development of the chosen concept.

With over a hundred entries & a lot of arduous deliberation, an independent panel of industry experts from all over the world has short listed the top 10 most innovative mobile games concepts. The criteria & basis of selection was based on game innovation, fun, market potential & feasibility of execution. The top three developers who would fit the bill perfectly will have to present their concepts at the Nokia Games Summit, Rome, Italy on October 29, 2008.

Top 10 developers and their concepts are:

Active Tecnologia e Consultoria Ltda. (Brazil) – Cinemarena – Get ready to control the avatars on the 70 mm screen. You can make the characters move according to your whims & fancies.

CreatePlayShare (India) – Ball – Love Basketball? Worship Cricket? Crazy about Football? You name it, you can play it! Play any type of ball game on your mobile phone or even create your own new game.

A Different Game (Sweden) – Ghost Wire – Always wished to communicate with the other world? You don’t require a medium, Ouija board or a clairvoyant to do so. All you need is this game on your device. Get ready to be spooked!

Eclipse Interactive (UK) – Watchers – Aspired to be a spy a la James Bond? Well then you will love this conspiracy adventure.

Int13 (France) – Kweekies – Dog lovers, cat lovers, horse lovers, all pet lovers can play this reality virtual pet game that allows them to interact with their pet by using the camera of their mobile device.

Jadestone (Sweden) and C4M (France) – Melokey – So you think you can sing? Then this is for you. All you have to do to showcase your skills is learn to master songs and play them against other in-game characters to win the hearts of your fans.

LemonQuest (Spain) – Wave Pirates – Ahoy! Pirates ahead!! Who says you have to be Johnny Depp to play a pirate? You can be one in this game, navigate ships, loot gold & fight other pirates too. Oh, but you won’t have a Keira Knightley for company here!!

Onur Yazilim (Turkey) – Comet Hunter – Interested in outer space? Well you can certainly explore it here in this game. A 2-D shooting game where you have to gun down comets with natural sound effects created by you.

Simlife (China) – XDancery – Art & Music go hand in hand in this game. Now draw patterns & sing along hitting the right notes.

TechnoBubble (Spain) – Fun Cam – Participate in a mixed reality game that connects your camera of your mobile device to the TV.

“The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge has demonstrated the huge potential of this industry on a global level, and the innovation that can be applied to mobile games,” said Dr Mark Ollila, director of games publishing, Nokia. “We’ve seen some groundbreaking ideas and some really unique concepts. It just goes to show how many creative minds there are out there and it really looks like we’re going to set out what we wanted to achieve with this Challenge – to rock the industry. Everyone’s now talking about the awards ceremony and we’re looking forward to an exciting outcome.”

The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge was launched in April 2008 with an aim of encouraging the development of innovation gaming concepts.

Nokia Games Publishing has sponsored The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge. It’s a competition for mobile game developers to come up with concepts that will take mobile gaming to a new & higher level. The game developers have to depend on the features & functionalities of N-Gage compatible devices & Java or Symbian-based Series 40 or S60 devices from Nokia.
